Often, we find ourselves in situations where we need help from others. Therefore, it is often beneficial to cultivate the quality of kindness. Gavin’s Goggles by Andy Lightner is a children’s book that relates the value of being kind.

Gavin was swimming in the sea trying to find seashells. Unexpectedly, a wave swept past him and knocked off his goggles. The goggles went straight down to the seafloor, beyond Gavin’s reach. This made him quite unhappy. On the floor of the seabed, Pincher, the blue crab, examined the goggles closely without understanding why or how the item got there. His friends got involved and began to find a way to return the goggles to its rightful owner.

Gavin’s character was well developed and consistent. His reaction to the loss of his goggles was quite appropriate for his age. Kids would easily identify with the way he felt. Other characters in the story would also appeal to kids.

The moral lesson in the story can help kids build better relationships. The sea creatures showed a willing spirit to help get the goggles back to its owner without hoping for any kind of reward. This can teach children to work with others as a team and be kind and truly helpful to others.

At the conclusion of the book, the shapes of the sea creatures and their names were provided to serve as coloring projects for kids. Children would find this interesting and innovative. It is my favorite part of the book.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It was exceptionally well edited. However, I deducted a star due to the grainy pictures which I did not find attractive. This is what I disliked about the book. I feel the pictures should have been brighter and more attractive. Children between the ages of 3 to 7 years will find the story captivating.

Wonderful story for students to read
Gavin's Goggles is an intriguing story about a pair of goggles that goes missing in the ocean. The author gives a fun account of where Gavin's goggles end up in the ocean and the animals that help get the goggles back to Gavin. As a third grade teacher, I have enjoyed reading Gavin's Goggles with my class and my students enjoy reading it to themselves. Gavin's Goggles is a story worth sharing with others.

Great addition to the library! By Amazon Customer on January 9, 2016

This is a great story! The characters are fun, kids love the story and the illustrations are excellent. I especially liked the fact that the story is great for younger kids to follow and the writing is robust enough for slightly older ones to ready to their siblings. Great addition to your children’s Library.

Sweet, enchanting story that’s actually based on a child’s real-life beach “struggles.” My children are CRAZY for this story!
